UNHCR begins reconstruction after fire in camp kills seven kids

Reconstruction began over the weekend at an informal tented settlement for Syrian refugees in Western Bekaa after a devastating fire left seven children dead and dozens of shelters destroyed. The children were killed when a fire, believed to have been caused by a faulty a gas cylinder, tore through 30 tents Thursday, the U.N. refugee agency said. Two adults and an eighth child are being treated for injuries, according to the UNHCR. Much like the existing settlement, the new tents will be made of wood and plastic sheeting atop concrete bases. Fire at refugee settlement in West Bekaa kills eight

A fire caused by a gas cylinder explosion killed or injured over 10 people, the majority of them children, in a Syrian refugee settlement near Ghazzeh in Western Bekaa Thursday. The state-run National News Agency cited the Civil Defense as saying that eight people were killed and four injured in the fire. A group of men were arrested on suspicion they were behind the filmed assault of a Syrian national in a video that went viral, Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk announced in a Twitter Wednesday. “The men who assaulted the Syrian refugee were recently arrested by the [Internal Security Forces’] Intelligence Branch,” Machnouk’s Twitter post read. A score of Syrian nationals detained by the Lebanese Army last month following a raid in the northeastern town of Arsal have been referred to the judiciary for their involvement in terrorism, the Army said in a statement Monday. Refugee families leave Lebanon back to Syria

Several Syrian refugee families Saturday departed Lebanon at dawn to the Asal al-Ward area in northeast of Damascus along the Syrian–Lebanese border, the Lebanese Army announced in a statement.
