LebMASH: Persecution and marginalization of LGBT people have serious consequences on health

On this International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, the Lebanese Medical Association for Sexual Health (LebMASH) would like to take the opportunity to remind government officials, Lebanese police and security forces, policy makers, health care professionals, and the public in general that persecution and marginalization of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people and other minorities have serious and detrimental direct and indirect consequences on health. Numerous studies have shown a direct link between the stress induced by persecution and marginalization and negative mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicidality. Also, living in fear and isolation can lead…

LBGT activists stage rare Lebanon sit-in

Some 50 activists backing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community staged a rare sit-in Sunday in Lebanon to demand the abolition of a law criminalizing relations "against nature". In the first such protest in four years, they also demanded the release of four transsexual women as they gathered outside the Hbeish gendarmerie in Beirut, where activists say morality police often hold such suspects. "Homosexuality is not a disease," and "Sex is not illegal -- your law is archaic," read a placard at the event organised by the Lebanon-based Helem association, considered to be the most important Arab group…

Tunisia: LGBT rights group Schams suspended

The Tunisian authorities’ decision to suspend the activities of the LGBT rights group Shams is a setback for individual freedoms and equal rights in Tunisia, Human Rights Watch said today. Shams works on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights. Shams registered with the government’s secretary general in May 2015, as an organization working to support sexual and gender minorities. A media that feeds our ignorance

With the United States Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage, our side of the world has had an opinion outbreak on love. However people adopt the idea of affection, though, love remains a universal human right and an open door to peace.   Our reality and built perception is constructed and shaped by social norms instilled from childhood; a collection of thoughts that were given to us. Society around us has shaped our approach to the understanding of reality in a certain formula; one way society has shaped our understandings is the media. We all have been grouped into one big…

Cependant, une idée égocentrique me trotte…

NGO urges state to enforce anal test ban

Prime Minister Tammam Salam has yet to respond to a letter he received earlier this month from a sexual health organization urging him to put an end to unethical “anal tests” and other discriminatory measures used on those suspected of being homosexual, which is illegal under Lebanese law. In a letter sent in October, the Lebanese Medical Association for Sexual Health asked the premier to publicly support the ban of such tests, which have been described as torture by the Lebanese Order of Physicians and have been banned by the Interior Ministry since 2012. The letter pointed out that despite…
