Syrians who obtain work permits in Lebanon risk losing refugee aid

Labor Minister Mohammad Kabbara Monday agreed with the UNHCR to grant Syrian refugees in Lebanon work permits in three sectors, although recipients would no longer be eligible to receive aid. The agreement says that Syrians can obtain work permits in environment, construction and agriculture sectors in accordance with the law. However, the deal states that Syrians who obtain work permits would no longer be able to receive aid as refugees. The National News Agency reported that the agreement was made on Monday during a meeting between Kabbara and UNHCR's Representative in Lebanon Mireille Girard. Inspection teams would also intensify their…

General Security waives residency fee for over million registered Syrian refugees

Over a million Syrian refugees in Lebanon will no longer have to pay a $200 renewal fee required to maintain residency in the country, General Security announced Friday. “Syrian refugees registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees before 2015 can now obtain a six-month residency permit for free,” General Security said in a statement. The new policy, once fully implemented, will waive the payment normally required for visas, meaning that Syrian refugees will be able to stay legally and without threat of arrest for visa violations. Aid agencies say the move will improve access to many services including…

Syrian refugees fewer in 2016, but challenges greater: UNHCR

Despite a small decrease in the overall number of registered Syrian refugees in Lebanon, the vulnerable community is facing increased challenges, UNHCR announced this week in its final update for 2016. The report, an official update of work by major aid agencies on the Syrian crisis in Lebanon covering December 2016 to January 2017 and released Tuesday, marked another slight decrease in registered refugees to 1,011,366 – down 185,194 from a peak of 1,196,560 in April 2015. It also noted that $1.12 billion was allocated last year for agencies and the Lebanese government, less than half of the $2.48 billion…

Iraqi Christian refugees protest, seeking resettlement

Dozens of Iraqi Christian refugees in Lebanon protested outside the U.N. building in Downtown Beirut Monday, calling for faster resettlement abroad. Between 150 and 200 demonstrators gathered outside the U.N. Thousands of Iraqis have fled the ongoing violence in their home country and have come to Lebanon. Many are from the Iraqi Christian minority seeking religiously diverse Lebanon in the wake of Daesh’s (ISIS) invasion of Christian areas in…
