Lebanon deporting migrant workers with kids

After a lull throughout most of 2015 and 2016, General Security has resumed deporting foreign domestic workers who have had children in Lebanon, Human Rights Watch reported Tuesday. Since last summer, Lebanese authorities have reportedly detained at least 21 migrant domestic workers with children, claiming that the workers had given birth in the country, were not living with their employers or both. “We have been receiving a lot of cases like this recently,” Roula Hamati, a researcher at the migrant rights advocacy group Insan Association told The Daily Star. Georges Abdallah to go hunger strike in support of Palestinian prisoners

Leftist Lebanese prisoner Georges Abdallah Monday announced he will go on a three-day hunger strike in solidarity with roughly 1,000 Palestinian prisoners who have done the same for over a week Joseph Abdallah, a member of the International Campaign to Free Georges Abdallah, added in a Facebook post that several of his inmates in France, where he is serving a life sentence, will join the three-day solidarity hunger strike. France to resettle 500 refugees from Lebanon

President Francois Hollande Tuesday inked an agreement to resettle 500 refugees, mostly Syrians, from Lebanon over the next 18 months. The signing ceremony took place at the Elysee Palace, where Interior Minister Bruno le Roux and Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault were also present. During a speech at the event, Hollande said that incoming refugees would be identified by partner organization on the ground in Lebanon and vetted by the authorities in Paris before traveling by Air France flights to France. Syrians who obtain work permits in Lebanon risk losing refugee aid

Labor Minister Mohammad Kabbara Monday agreed with the UNHCR to grant Syrian refugees in Lebanon work permits in three sectors, although recipients would no longer be eligible to receive aid. The agreement says that Syrians can obtain work permits in environment, construction and agriculture sectors in accordance with the law. However, the deal states that Syrians who obtain work permits would no longer be able to receive aid as refugees. UNHCR contracts new TPA to handle refugee health

A new company has been awarded a contract with the U.N. to manage health coverage for Syrian refugees in Lebanon, the agency announced Tuesday. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has signed a partnership with Dubai-based third party administrator NEXtCARE to manage its financial and medical audit of coverage for the 1.01 million registered Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
