Press freedoms worsen, cultural freedoms protected: report
Press freedoms experienced a setback in Lebanon last year largely due to the politicization of the Syrian conflict, according to a report that documents 91 media and cultural freedom violations in 2012. The report issued Tuesday by SKeyes, the Center for Media and Cultural Freedom at the Samir Kassir Foundation, found that despite several violations, authorities made progress in protecting cultural freedoms in the country, but press freedoms suffered an across-the-board drop. “The number of censorship decisions decreased, although not enough, and the judiciary ruled in favor of artists in all cases related to freedom of expression this year,”…
