BEIRUT: Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour urged all Lebanese political parties Monday to keep children out of their conflicts. “Once again, children in Lebanon are being subject to the worst types of human rights violations,” Abu Faour, speaking on behalf of the Higher Council for Childhood, said in a statement. “Amid the unfortunate rounds of violence in Tripoli, the incident of the girl who was forced to shoot a machine gun by several armed men was a blatant [violation of her rights]. ... This act is immoral and a crime, in addition to its being a clear and flagrant breach of the Convention on the Rights of the Child,” he said, referring to the international legal document enshrining the rights of children. “We call on all relevant forces, whether political or not, to keep children away from their disputes, especially security and military conflicts.” Following the latest round of clashes in Tripoli, a video depicting a young girl being taught by armed men to use a machine gun went viral on the Internet.
