Experts warn against waste incineration

Incineration as a waste disposal method is both expensive and environmental hazardous when not done correctly, a panel of experts at the American University of Beirut warned Wednesday. “Incineration is an extremely expensive technology that requires a lot of investment in environmental protections,” Jad Chaaban, an associate professor of economics, said at the conference at AUB’s Issam Fares Institute. Chaaban added that the technical complexity of the process and lack of regulatory infrastructure meant the practical application was likely to be both an ineffective and potentially dangerous solution to Lebanon’s trash crisis. Alan Shihadeh, a professor of mechanical engineering, also…

Health ministry penalizes Mt. Lebanon town for burning trash

The Health Ministry Sunday issued a penalty against a Mount Lebanon municipality for dumping and burning garbage near a highway, endangering the health of locals. The ministry found trash recently burnt in the Aley town of Kahaleh. Since the start of Lebanon's trash crisis last summer, Mounds of garbage have accumulated on the side of the Beirut-Damascus Highway and dumped in valleys in Khaldeh and the surrounding area. The ministry referred the case to relevant authorities through the qaimaqam of Aley. Nearly 100 municipalities have so far been referred to the judiciary for trash burning. Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk issued…

Salam Issues Stiff Warning on Waste Crisis

Prime Minister Tammam Salam warned cabinet ministers on Thursday that he would not call for a cabinet session next week if the country’s seven-month-long waste problem is not resolved soon. Salam denied that he would suspend cabinet sessions, telling ministers the situation is “much worse than that,” Information Minister Ramzi Jreij said in his press briefing. The PM spoke at the start of the session that he chaired at the Grand Serail. A ministerial committee has been holding meetings since the cabinet decided last month to end an export plan and instead focus on decentralization. The export scheme to Russia…

Financial Prosecutor Sues Sukleen on Charges of 'Squandering Public Funds'

Financial Prosecutor Ali Ibrahim has filed a lawsuit against the Sukleen and Sukomi firms on charges of “squandering public funds” in their handling of waste management in the country in the past two decades, media reports said on Wednesday. Ibrahim's move is based on the lawsuit that has been filed by Kataeb Party chief MP Sami Gemayel, the reports said. Gemayel filed a lawsuit against the Council for Development and Reconstruction last week for its long running failure to follow up on the trash management file since Sukleen and its subsidiary Sukomi were tasked with collecting, sorting and land-filling garbage…

Kataeb youth demonstration demands end to trash crisis

Kataeb Party youth protested Sunday against Lebanon’s ongoing trash crisis, lashing out at the Cabinet and the Council for Development and Reconstruction for their failure to address the 7-month-old calamity. Supporters gathered at around 4 p.m. outside the party’s main headquarters near Martyrs’ Square where demonstrators rallied under the banner of “Lebanon is Not a Dump” as they waved Lebanese and Kataeb flags. An empty chair was also placed in the middle of the road outside the building with a sign reading “Elect a president before the post merely becomes a symbol,” in reference to the ongoing 21-month presidential vacuum.…

Fears over Closure of Karantina Dumpster Threaten Capital

Lebanon's capital will likely once again witness the piling of garbage on its streets if a substitute for the Karantina dumpster, which reached its maximum capacity, is not found, al-Akhbar daily reported on Tuesday. February 24 is the deadline when the waste contractor for Greater Beirut and Mount Lebanon Sukleen will stop removing the trash from the streets after the disposal ground began to run out of space, as per Sukleen officials.  The company said that two weeks ago it has sent a letter to Governor of Beirut Ziad Shbib informing him that the location which receives the waste of…
